Mariah’s take on:
Reaching people where they are.
The link between communications and social change has always been a passion for Mariah, and she’s driven by the opportunity to inform, inspire and empower people through marketing campaigns. She’s especially passionate about mental health, food and housing insecurity, and issues facing youth, the LGBTQ+ community and people of color.
She says she’s always looking for opportunities to engage directly with community partners and organizations.
Mariah says.
“I’m inspired by people who are passionate, thoughtful and intentional in the work they’re doing. People show their values in the way they share pieces of themselves and care for the people and communities they’re working for.”
The importance of storytelling.
Mariah is drawn to compelling storytelling in communications, a way of connecting with audiences with a powerful human element.
“When I’m approaching work, I imagine what the story could be. Who are we talking about and how are we talking about them? What does that mean and say in the larger context?” Mariah says.
She sees value in all kinds of narratives, especially when it comes to shining a light on experiences that haven’t often received mainstream attention. “It’s really important that everyone feels represented and heard, that we’re making space for others, and that we give people the platforms they need to share their stories in a way that matters to them,” she says.
A creative impulse.
That curiosity extends to Mariah’s interests outside DH. She’s an avid reader, especially of memoirs and fantasy novels that introduce perspectives and experiences beyond her own.
Mariah also loves secondhand shopping and yard sales: “Not only because I love a good deal,” she says, “but you also get a little bit of a story, and an opportunity to repurpose and renew something.”
